A Prayer for Las Vegas

Father,

We thank you for today. We thank you for this place, this world, our home. We thank you for this church, and we thank you for one another and the deepening of our relationships. Father, we ask that you help us walk with one another in grace and tolerance, with open minds and open hearts. Give us the courage, Lord, to stand up to injustice and persecution when our brothers and sisters are treated poorly due to their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or religious beliefs.

In times like these, we often look for meaning in the violence, desperately searching for a motive or something to help make sense of such senseless and tragic events as that which unfolded in Las Vegas last Sunday; ultimately, though, there is no making sense of such heinous atrocities because they are not of Your will. Father, we pray for those who have been directly and indirectly impacted by the decisions of Stephen Paddock, which have lead to so much suffering; we pray for their healing - physically, mentally, and spiritually. Give them the strength to overcome and rise above the weight of despair and sorrow that's crushing down upon them; show them your light in these darkest of hours.

Father, help guide us back to the time when You created both the heavens and the earth and all was considered "good". Search our hearts and instill in each and every one of us the desire to heal and restore and reconcile and renew this world, our home. Lead us back to you. Hear us as we pray:

"Our father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen"
